This step by step woodworking project is about building a barn chicken coop roof plans. This is the PART 2 of the 4×8 chicken coop project, where I show you how to build the gambrel roof and how to attach the siding to the exterior of the frame. Make sure you take a look over the rest of the plans, as well. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a gambrel roof for a chicken coop

Building the rafters

Building the rafters

First of all, build the rafters for the roof from 2×4 lumber. Make 22.5 degree cuts to both ends of the rafters, as shown in the diagram. Smooth the edges flush.

Assembling the trusses

Assembling the trusses

Lay the rafters on a level surface and then lock them together with 1/2″ plywood. Align the edges flush and then insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock everything tightly.

Fitting the trusses

Fitting the trusses

Fit the trusses to the top of the shed and place them every 24″ on center. Use rafter ties to lock the trusses to the top plates.

Front wall roof support

Front wall roof support

Use 2×4 lumber supports for the front and back ends. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and then secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws.

Back wall roof support

Back wall roof support

Fit a support to the back of the shed, as well.

Side wall panel

Side wall panel

Fit T1-11 siding to the side wall that will have the nesting boxes. Align the edges with attention and then insert 6-8d nails to lock the sheets into place tightly, every 8″ along the framing.

Fit the siding sheets to the opposite side wall. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a nice result.

Front wall - siding

Front wall – siding

Afterwards, fit the siding sheets to the front wall of the shed. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make cuts around the door opening so you can get a professional result. Align the edges flush and insert 6-8d nails to lock the sheet into place tightly.

Back wall siding

Back wall siding

Attach the siding to the back wall, as well. Make cuts around the small door opening, as well around the window opening and secure the panel into place with 6-8d nails.

Roof sheets

Roof sheets

Fit 3/4″ plywood sheets to the roof of the barn chicken coop. Align the edges flush and then insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the sheets into place tightly.
