Materials

  • A – 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 18 1/2″x18 1/2″ long SIDES
  • B – 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 18 1/2″x24″ long FACES
  • C – 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 18 1/2″x22 1/2″ long BOTTOM
  • D – 2 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 18 1/2″ long, 2 pieces – 24″ long, 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 18 1/2″x22 1/2″ long LID

  • 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 4’x8′
  • 1 piece of 1×4 lumber – 8 ft
  • hinges
  • 2 1/2″ screws
  • 1 1/4″ screws
  • glue, stain
  • wood filler

Tools

  • Safety gloves, glasses
  • Miter saw, jigsaw
  • Chalk line, tape measure, spirit level, carpentry pencil

  • Apply several coats of wood stain to the wooden components
  • Fill the holes with wood filler and smooth the surface

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the wooden trunk. Cut the components at the right size out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes along the sides of the side components and insert the screws into the perpendicular components. Check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

Cut a piece of 3/4″  plywood at the dimensions described in the diagram and drill pocket holes along the edges. Fit the piece of plywood inside the frame, align it with great care and secure it into place with 1 1/4″ screws.

Build the frame of the lid out of 1×4 lumber, as shown in the image. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side components and insert them into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are right-angled and attach the 3/4″ top. Drill pocket holes along the edges of the plywood piece and secure it to the frame with 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to enhance the bond of the structure.

Fit the lid to the wooden trunk and secure it to the structure with metal hinges. In addition, add a nice metal handle to the front of the lid, as described in the image.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the trunk.
