This step by step project is about wooden crate plans. If you want to build something with both a great look and a functional edge, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. There are many designs and plans to choose from so we really suggest you to pay attention to the rest of the woodworking projects featured on this site.

There are several preliminary steps that you should take into account before starting the actual construction of the crate, especially if you haven’t worked with lumber before. Therefore, we recommend you to choose the design that suits your tastes and to adjust the size of the components according to your needs. Work with attention and if great care if you want to prevent costly mistakes.

There are many materials that you could use for the wooden crate, so we recommend you invest in weather-resistant lumber, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Locking the wooden components together is also important, so we recommend you to drill pocket holes and to insert the screws screws with attention. Add waterproof glue to the joints if you want to enhance the bond of the joints. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the faces of the crate

Building the faces of the crate

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the faces of the wooden crate. As you can easily notice in the image we recommend you to assemble the frames by using 1×2 and 1×3 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and lock them together with galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints if you want to create a rigid structure.

Continue the project by attaching a piece of 1/2″ plywood inside the frame. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the plywood piece and lock it to the sides with screws. Make sure the piece of plywood is aligned at both ends before locking it into place with screws.

The next step of the project is fit the slats between the faces of the wooden crate. Check if the corners are right-angled before continuing the woodworking project.

Attaching the bottom

Attaching the 1/2″ plywood bottom to the wooden crate is a straight forward project, especially if you take accurate measurements. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wooden crate.
