Building a rustic farmhouse cabinet

Building the sides

Building the sides

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the cabinet. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the plywood sheets or on the 1×14 slats and to get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Assembling the frame of the cabinet

Next, fit the bottom component to the farmhouse cabinet. Cut the bottom component at the right size and drill pocket holes at both sides. Fit the component to the structure and secure it into place using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints. Use a spirit level to check if the bottom is horizontal.

Attaching the back

Attaching the back

Build the back component out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the edges. Fit the component to the frame and insert 1 1/4″ screws to create rigid joints. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are flush, before inserting the screws.

Continue the project by fitting the top component into place. Drill pocket holes along the sides and the back of the component. Attach the component to the top and insert 1 1/4″ screws to secure it into place tightly. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the shelf

Fitting the shelf

If you want to enhance the storage space of the cabinet, we recommend you to fit a shelf to the structure. Cut the component out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the sides and back edges. Fit the component to the cabinet and insert 1 1/4″ screws to secure it into place.

Building the doors

Building the doors

Build the frame of the doors out of 1×3 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the vertical supports. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Check if the edges are flush before inserting the screws. Build the panel out of 1/2″ plywood. Drill pocket holes along the edges and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws and glue.

Use a router to make the 1/4″ x 1/4″ rabbets to the back of the frame, as described in the diagram. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the door glass

Fit the piece of glass to the door and seal it into place with clips or with silicone. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the edges are flush.

Fitting the doors

Fit the doors to the openings and secure it to the structure using appropriate hinges. Leave 1/8″ around the edges and install handles to the doors. Make sure the doors open and close properly before installing the doors into place.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the rustic cabinet.
