This step by step woodworking project is about free playhouse with porch roof plans. This is PART 2 of the 8×8 outdoor playhouse project, where I show you step by step plans for building the roof of the and the porch. Take a look over the diagrams, so you learn how to build the roof framing and the porch supports. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a roof for a playhouse with porch

Building the roof rafters

Building the roof rafters

The first step is to build the rafters for the outdoor playhouse. Use 2×2 lumber for the rafters and make the angle cuts, as shown in the diagram.

Cutting the birdsmouth

Cutting the birdsmouth

Make the birdsmouth cuts to the rafters, so you can secure them into place easily.

Fitting the rafters

Fitting the rafters

Fit the rafters to the top of the playhouse, every 24″ on center. Plumb the rafters with a spirit level and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws.

Side walls - Siding

Side walls – Siding

Fit the 1/2″ or 3/4″ plywood sheets to the sides of the playhouse. Make the cuts to the sheets and then secure them into place with 6-8d nails. Align the edges flush for a professional result. Make the cuts for the window openings.

Front porch supports

Front porch supports

Continue the project by assembling the supports for the front porch. Cut the components from 2×2 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the studs. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.
