Carport with Storage Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about free carport with storage plans. If you need both a carport to shelter your car and a small shed for the small garden tools, I have combined them into a project. This single car carport features a small shed attached to the back, so you can save space and add value to your property.  See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Build a single car carport with storage

Laying out the posts

Laying out the posts

The first step of the project is to select the area for the carport and layout the posts. As you can probably imagine, you need to read the building codes and comply with the requirements, before starting the actual project. Make sure the area is level and then use string and batter boards to mark the location for the posts.

Measure the diagonals and adjust the location of the posts until they are equal. Apply the 3-4-5 rule to each corner so you make sure the corners are square.

Anchoring the posts

Anchoring the posts

Dig holes for the concrete footings. Fit tube forms to the holes and then fill them with concrete. Install the adjustable post anchors and then let it dry out. Fit the 6×6 posts into place and use 2×4 braces to lock them into place tightly.

For this project I recommend using 6×6 posts, not 4×4 posts, but securing them into place is identical.

Top beams

Top beams

Build the 6×6 beams for the top of the posts. Mark the cut lines on the beams and then make the notches with a circular saw. Make parallel cuts to the marked areas and then use a chisel to clean the recess. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a neat result.

Fitting the top beams

Fitting the top beams

Fit the beams to the top of the posts. Use a spirit level to plumb the posts and to check of the top beams are perfectly horizontal. Drill pilot holes through the beams and insert 5 1/2″ screws into the posts. Insert at least 2 screws in each post. Make sure the corners are square.

Back and Front wall - Frame

Back and Front wall – Frame

Continue the project by assembling the front and back walls for the storage area. If you have built a shed before, this should go really fast. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber at the right dimensions. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.

Side wall with door - Frame

Side wall with door – Frame

Build the side wall with door for the storage area. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Fit the 2×4 double header so you enhance the rigidity of the frame.

Side wall - Frame

Side wall – Frame

Assembling the opposite side wall frame for the carport storage area, using the same techniques described above.

Assembling the shed frame

Assembling the shed frame

Fit the wall frames into place, as shown in the plans. Drill pilot holes and secure the frames to the structure of the carport. In addition,

Back and Front Wall - Siding

Back and Front Wall – Siding

Fit the T1-11 siding panels to the front and back walls of the shed area. Align the edges flush, leave no gaps between then, and insert 6-8d nails into the framing, every 8″.

Side wall - Siding

Side wall – Siding

Cut the panels for the side wall and lock them into place with 6-8d nails.

Wall with door - Siding

Wall with door – Siding

Fit the siding sheets to the sides of the carport storage area with the door. Mark the cut lines and then get the job done with a caw. Smooth the edges, fit the sheets to the frame and align the edges flush. Use 6-8d nails to lock the sheets into place tightly.
