This step by step woodworking project is about 10×12 gambrel shed roof plans. This is the PART 2 of small shed project, where I show you how to build the gambrel roof for the shed. Building the roof for the shed is really easy if you follow my tips and diagrams with attention. Read the local codes before starting the project, so you comply with the requirements. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

10×12 Gambrel Shed Roof – DIY Plans

Gambrel-rafters

Gambrel-rafters

Use 2×6 lumber for the rafters. Mark the cut lines on the beams and then get the job done with a circular saw or miter saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper. Notice the 22.5 degree cuts to both ends of the beams.

Birdsmouth-cuts

Birdsmouth-cuts

For the bottom rafters, we need to make birdsmouth cuts, so you can lock them into place best. Mark the cut lines and get the job done with a saw.

Gussets

Gussets

Use 1/2″ plywood for the gussets. Use a circular saw to make the cuts, as shown in the diagram. Add the gussets to the rafters and lock them into place with 1 5/8″ screws.

Fitting-the-gambrel-trusses

Fitting-the-gambrel-trusses

Fit the rafters to the top of the shed. Place the rafters every 24″ on center, equally spaced, as shown in the diagram. Use rafter ties and 1 1/2″ structural screws to lock the trusses into place.

Gambrel-end-supports

Gambrel-end-supports

Use 2×4 lumber for the gambrel end supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and then insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Fit the panels to the front and back walls. As you can see in the diagram, you need to make a few cuts to fit the panels around the door opening.

Use 2×6 lumber for the overhangs. You can adjust the size of the overhangs according to the size of the blockings.

Fit 1/2″ plywood sheets to the roof of the shed. Align the sheets with attention, making sure you leave no gaps between them. Insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the sheets into place, every 8″ along the rafters.

Fitting-the-shed-roofing

Cover the roofing sheets with tar paper. Install the tar paper starting with the bottom of the roof and make sure the strips overlap for at least 2″. In addition, fit a 12” strip over the top ridge. Install the shingles starting with the left- bottom of the roof, after fitting the starting course. Use roofing tacks to secure the shingles into place.

Shed-double-doors

Build the door panels from 5/8″ T1-11 siding sheets and the frame from 2×4 lumber. First, assemble the door frame from 2×4 lumber using pocket holes. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical supports and to both ends of the horizontal supports. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to assemble the door frame together tightly. Secure the door panel to the frame with 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″.

Door-jambs
