This step by step woodworking project is about wooden 2×4 bench with back plans. I have designed this outdoor bench with backrest so you can get the job done in one weekend. You can build this bench with just 7 boards of 2×4 lumber and 2 1/2″ screws. Work with attention also take a look over the rest of my garden bench designs, especially this one. See my other DIY projects HERE.
We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.Â

How to build a 2×4 bench with back
The first step of the project is to build the legs for the outdoor bench. Use 2×4 lumber for the legs and make 15 degree cuts at both ends. You can use a miter saw or a carpentry square and a circular saw.
Use 2×4 lumber for the braces. Make the angle cuts at both ends of the braces, as shown in the diagram.
Use the backrest supports from 2×4 lumber. Make the top edges curved, using a jigsaw. Use a miter saw to make an angled cut to the bottom of the back support. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a proper result.
The next step of the assemble the side frames. Lay the legs on a level surface against a wall or a straight edges. Lay the braces and align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them together tightly. Attach the backrest support to the frames and leave no gaps between the components. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them together tightly.
The next step of the project is to assemble the bench frame by fitting the stretcher. Drill pilot holes through the braces and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the stretcher. Make sure corners are square.
Attach the 2×4 slats to the frame of the bench. Place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
Fit the backrest slats to the seat supports. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the 2×4 bench and to protect the components from decay.
