5×5 Deer Blind Roof Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about free 5×5 deer blind plans. This is PART 2 of the project, where I show you how to build the lean to roof and the door for the back of the shelter. Make sure you take a look over PART 1 of the hunting project, as well, so you learn how to build the frame of the shed. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a 5×5 deer blind

Materials

• D – 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 24″x86″ long, 1 piece – 48″x86″ long, 1 piece 48″x70 1/4″ long, 1 piece – 24″x70 1/4″ long, 2 pieces – 48″x88″ long, 2 pieces – 24″x88″ long WALLS
• F – 4 pieces of 2×2 lumber – 72″ long RAFTERS
• G – 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 24″x72″ long, 1 piece – 48″x72″ long ROOF
• H – 40 sq ft of tar paper, 40 sq ft of asphalt shingles ROOFING
• I – 2 pieces of 2×2 lumber – 46 1/2″ long, 2 pieces – 29 1/4″ long, 1 piece – 26 1/4″ long, 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 30 1/4″x50 1/2″ long DOOR

How to build a 5×5 deer blind roof

Fitting the rafters

The first step of the project is to build the roof for the 5×5 deer blind. Therefore, you have to fit the 2×2 rafters to the top of the box, as shown in the diagram. Make sure you place the rafters as shown in the diagram, or even equally spaced. Center the rafters into place, so you create even overhangs to the front and to the back. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the rafters into place tightly.

Front wall – Exterior

The next step of the project is to fit the sheets to the front of the deer box. Cut the sheets at the right dimensions and then align the edges flush. Insert 1 5/8″ screws every 8″ along the framing. Make the cuts around the window openings.

Back wall – Exterior

Fit the panels to the back wall of the deer blind, as well. Make the cuts so you can fit the panels around the door opening and around the window opening. Insert 1 5/8″ screws every 8″ along the framing, for a professional result.

Side walls – Exterior

Cut and fit the plywood panels to the sides of the deer blind, for a professional result. Align the edges flush.

Fitting the roof sheets

Use 3/4″ plywood sheets for the roof of the deer blind, as well. Center the sheets to the top of the structure, making sure you leave 6″ overhangs on both sides.

Fitting the roofing

You could fit asphalt shingles to protect the shed, as it is a straight forward solution. Therefore, install roofing felt over the roofing sheets, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under. Place a starting course at the bottom of the roof, before installing the asphalt shingles. Always read the manufacturing instructions before starting the installation, as there are several aspects that differ.

Smart Tip: The first course should star with a 3 tab shingle, the second course with a  2 1/2 tab , the third course with a 2 tab, the forth course with a 1 1/2 tab, the fifth course with a 1 tab, the sixth course with a 1/2 tab. Repeat the process from the beginning, starting with the seventh course. Don’t forget that the shingles should overhang from the drip edge about a 1/4″. In addition, secure the asphalt shingles to the roof decking with tacks.

Side blinds

Fit the 3/4″ blinds to the sides of the deer box. Use hinges to secure the blinds into place tightly.

Front wall blind

Fit the blinds to the front wall of the box, as well.

Back blind

Fit the blinds to the back of the deer blind, using the same techniques described above.

Building the frame of the door

Build the frame for the door from 2×2 lumber. Cut the components at the right dimensions and then drill pilot holes. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the frame of the door together tightly. Make sure the edges are flush and check if the corners are square.

Assembling the door

Center the frame to the door panel, making sure you inset it 1/2″ on all sides. Use 1 5/8″ screws to lock the panel to the door frame.

Fitting the door

Fit the door to the back of the deer blind. Align the edges with attention and install hinges, so you can lock the door into place tightly. Moreover, you need to install a latch so you can lock the door into place tightly.

I have designed this simple 5×5 deer box so you can shelter yourself during the hunting season. You can make adjustments to the size and to the shape of the shooting house to suit your needs. Read PART 1 of the project, so you learn how to build the frame of the deer box.
