How to Paint a Room with Washable Paint

This article is about how to paint a room with washable paint. This was a quick 2 day project, because we painted a new construction, so there was no flooring and no furniture inside the room. Therefore, less area and items to mask / remove. We used washable paint for the room because it offers a great ratio between benefits and costs. We went for white because the room features a natural stone wall, which we wanted to make the highlight area.

Remember that I show my techniques and experience, on this blog, so you can use other methods, as well. The walls of the room are plastered, so we applied a coat of primer before painting the surface, to ensure a proper bond between the paint coats and the walls. If you are re-painting a room, you need to cover the furniture and remove the trims / outlets so you can have access to all areas. Make small repairs if necessary. This is a new construction so this will be the first painting ever. Therefore, the preparation for the process is really easy. Make sure the support surface (plaster) is really smooth and even. We applied the primer to the whole surface that is going to be painted. For the areas less accessible, we used a paint brush.

You need to apply the primer before the paint coats, because it is very important. The primer makes the paint to stick to the walls for a long time. Make sure you read the manufacturer’s instructions, so you learn how to dilute / apply the primer. In addition, select a primer that is compatible with the paint.

For the other walls and ceiling, we used a roller because that speeds up the process. If you don’t use primer, you will need at least 4 coats of paint, thus spend more money on the materials.

Let the primer to dry out for one day. Afterwards, start applying the paint. Start with the corners of the room and use a small brush to apply the paint.

Next, continue with the other corners of the room. Make sure you use painter’s tape to mask areas, if necessary.

Now it is time for the big boy roller to step in. Make sure you don’t soak the roller with too much paint, because it will be really hard to spread it over the walls and ceiling.

Let the paint to dry out for a few hours, before applying coat number 2. The second coat will cover everything and really make the room pop out. You can play with colors, because the steps are really the same. Install all the outlets and move in the furniture.
