This step by step woodworking project is about free chicken pen trims plans. This is PART 2 of the chicken pen project, where I show you how to build the front door and how to attach the 1×2 trims that will lock the wire into place tightly. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components before assembling the pen, so you protect them from the elements. This pen is a great match for the large chicken coop plans. See my other DIY projects HERE.
We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to fit the door and the exterior trims
Fit chicken wire to the exterior of the pen. Make sure you cut the wire around the door opening, for a professional result. Staple the wire into place so you can stretch it properly. Then, you need to fit the 1×2 trims to the sides of the pen. Insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the trims into place tightly. Align the edges flush for a professional result.
Fit 1×2 trims to the front wall of the chicken coop. Cut the trims at the right dimensions and then lock them into place tightly with 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the framing.
Fit 1×2 trims to the back wall of the chicken pen. Use screws to lock the trims into place tightly. Align the edges flush for a professional result.
Fit 1×2 trims to the roof of the chicken coop. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
Use 2×2 lumber to build the frame of the door. Lock the components together with 2 1/2″ screws. Staple the chicken wire to the frame of the door. Assemble the trims for the door from 1×2 lumber. Attach the trims over the frame of the door and lock them into place tightly with 1 5/8″ screws.
Fit the door to the opening and align the edges with attention. Use hinges to lock the door into place tightly. Make sure the door opens and closes easily and lock it into place with a latch.
Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Make sure you smooth the sharp edges and double check if all the joints are locked together tightly. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components to protect them from rot.
Don’t forget to take a look over PART 1 of the project, where I show you how to build the frame for the chicken coop. This chicken pen is predatory safe, cheap to build and it looks great. If you like my project, don’t forget to SHARE it on Facebook and Pinterest.
