Before attaching the rafters to the structure, we recommend you to enhance the exterior of the double dog house by attaching 1×3 trims to the structure. Cut the components at the right size and shape before attaching them to the exterior walls. Align the components with attention before securing them into place with finishing nails. Make sure you leave no gaps between the trims before securing them into place.

Hi. My double dog house is coming along nicely. I’m about ready to add the roof, but am not exactly sure how to securely install the 4 rafters, based on the diagram in this article. Says to drill pilot holes in each end, but looks like the rafters are going between the rails. Please help explain to me this step. This is a great overall build, and my first time ever, doing a woodworking project.

You need to drill pocket holes at both ends and use 2 1/2″ screws. You need a jig for that. You can see my recommendations for a good jig here: http://howtospecialist.com/tools-for-starting-woodworking/
