You should always plan everything from the very beginning, in order to prevent costly mistakes and to save time. In most of the cases, you need a friend to give you a hand when assembling the chicken coop nesting box. Invest in high quality lumber and plywood, as the components will be exposed to bad weather. Protect the components with appropriate paint or stain.
There are a few tips that you should take into account, if you want to get a professional result. Therefore, take accurate measurements and use professional tools when making the cuts or when drilling pilot holes. Align the components at both ends and add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to create a rigid structure.

Building a nesting box
Â
The first step is to build the supports for the chicken nesting box. Cut the components out of 2×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical supports and at both ends of the 15 1/4″ components. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything tightly.
Â
Â
Next, you need to build the components for the nesting box, out of 3/4″ plywood. Use a circular saw to make the cuts and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
Â
Â
Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock everything together, as described in the diagram. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the corners are right-angled.
Â
Â
Â
Â
Build the lid for the nesting box out of 3/4″ plywood. Fit it to the structure, as described in the diagram and secure it to the structure using hinges.
Â
Â
Cover the lid with tar paper and with asphalt shingles. Staple the shingles into place and make sure the whole structure is waterproof.
Â
Â
Build the ladder base out of 3/4″ plywood. Attach 1×2 pieces of lumber to the base, as described in the diagram. Use finishing nails to lock the slats to the base of the ladder.
Â
Â
Attach the ladder to the chicken coop, as described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock it into place tightly.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.
