Building the sides

Building the sides

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the storage shelves. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to build the legs and the supports out of 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the components together properly. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints to enhance the bond of the components.

Next, you have to lock the sides of the shelves together using 2×4 supports, as in the diagram. Plumb the sides with a spirit level before inserting the screws and make sure the corners are square.

Continue the project by fitting the slats to the shelves structure. Cut the components at the right size and secure them to the supports using 2 1/2″ s screws. Leave no gaps between the components and drill pilot holes before inserting the screws.

In order to enhance the look of the shelves, we recommend you to fit trims to the sides of the shelves. Cut the ends of the supports at the right angle and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Fit the trims to the sides and secure them to the legs using 1 1/4″ screws. Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws and add glue to the joints.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the shelves.
