This step by step diy woodworking project is about how to make a shed door. Building a plywood door for your shed can be done by any person with basic skills, if the main techniques and professional tools are used. You can adjust the design of the door by adding diagonal trims to the plywood panel, especially if you want to create a traditional barn style shed.
If you want to get the job done in a professional manner from the very beginning, we recommend you to take accurate measurements and to use quality materials. Therefore, you make the shed door using the piece of plywood that was cut out when installing the siding to the front face of the shed and 1×4 lumber. Align the components at both ends and lock them together with 1 1/4″ nails and waterproof glue.
Fit the door inside the opening and lock it to the 1×4 jambs with metal hinges. After you check if the door opens properly, you should install the hinges, as well as a strong latch. Work with attention and with great attention, if you want to get the job done as a professional and to prevent costly mistakes. Last but not least, apply a few coats of exterior paint to enhance the look of the shed and to protect the components from decay. See HERE how to build double shed doors. Making a shed door
After you have built a shed, you need to make a plywood door and fit it into place. If you want to get a professional result, we recommend you to attach 1×4 jambs around the door opening and lock the components into place with screws.
How to make a shed door
The first step of the project is to install the door stop. As you can see in the image, you just need to secure a 1×2 piece of lumber to the door header. This step is not compulsory, but it will improve the rigidity of the door structure.
Continue the woodworking project and make the shed door, using 1×4 trims and 5/8″ siding. As you probably know, the best idea is to make the door using the piece of plywood you have cut out from the front panel. Attach the trims to the exterior edges of the plywood and lock them into place with 1 1/4″ finishing nails.
Attach 1×4 trims to the exterior edges of the door opening, as in the plans. Make sure you align the trims properly before locking them into place with finishing nails and waterproof nails. Fit the door inside the opening and lock it to the jambs with metal hinges. Check if the door opens properly and install a quality latch.
If you really want to enhance the look of the shed, we also recommend you to attach 1×4 trims to the corners of the shed. Cut the trims at the right size and lock them to the framing with 1 1/4″ nails. Add waterproof glue to enhance the bond of the components. Use a spirit level to check if the trims are plumb, before inserting the nails.
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Use a nail set to push the head of the nails under the surface of the trims. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
