This step by step woodworking project is about free 12×16 goat shelter plans. This project is about a large goat shelter that also has a separate area for storage. If you have a homestead then you should definitely check the plans and start building. The plans are PDF downloadable and come with full Cut / Shopping lists. This project only requires basic tools and you can save a lot by getting the job done by yourself. We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a 12×16 goat shelter

Materials

How to build a goat shelter – PDF Download

Skids

The first step of the project is to build the base for the goat shelter. Therefore, use 4×4 lumber for the skids. Use a circular saw to make the notches to the beams. Make parallel cuts inside the marked areas and then remove the excess with a chisel and a hammer.

Assembling the base of the shelter

The next step of the project is to assemble the base shed. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock the skids together tightly. Measure the diagonals and check if they are equal. Apply the 3-4-5 rule to the corners to make sure they are right angled.

Front wall frame

Build the front wall frame for the goat shelter. Use 2×4 lumber for the plates and for the studs. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 16″ on center. Use 2×6 lumber for the double headers. Sandwich the two pieces of 2×6 lumber to a piece of 1/2″ plywood (add glue to the joints and insert 2 1/2″ screws from both sides).

The front wall has an opening for the shed area and an opening for the foat area.

Back wall frame – 12×16 goat shelter

Assemble the back wall for the goat shelter, using the information from the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 16″ on center.

Fitting the front and back walls – goat shed

Fit the wall frames to the base of the goat shelter. Use a spirit level to plumb the wall frames and secure them temporarily with braces. Drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the skids.

Side wall frames

Assemble the side wall frames using 2x4s and the same techniques described above. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 16″ on center.

Assembling the frame of the goat shelter

Fit the side walls to the base of the goat shelter. Notice the partition that separates the storage area from the goat shelter. Lock the adjacent wall together tightly with 3 1/2″ screws, after drilling pilot holes.

Shed floor frame

Fit 2x4s for the floor of the storage area. Secure the 2x4s along the skids with 3 1/2 screws. Next, install the joists with hangers. Space the joists every 16″ on center.

Floor sheets – goat shelter

Fit the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the floor frame. Align the edges flush and leave no gaps between them. Insert 1 5/8″ screws every 8″ along the framing.

Fitting the roofing sheets

This goat shelter features a 2×4 wall framing structure and a dedicated area for storage. The shed is 4’x12 and the goat area is 12’x12′. This shelter is easy to build and it features a sturdy structure. You can build this by yourself and save tons of money.
