Building the gazebo railings

Fitting the supports

Fitting the supports

First of all, you need to fit the 2×4 supports to the gazebo. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to cut the components at the right size and to drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the supports into place and secure them to the posts using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square. The supports should be 1 1/2″ recessed from the front face of the posts. Adjust the size between the supports to suit your needs.

Fitting the balusters

Next, you need to fit the 2×2 balusters to the supports, as described in the diagram. Cut the components at the right size, drill pilot holes and secure them into place using 2 1/2″ screws. Place the balusters equally-spaced and leave no gaps between the balusters and the supports.

Fitting the handrail

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the handrails to the top of the supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends and secure them to the posts using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled. Drive a few finishing nails into the supports to add rigidity to the structure.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Check out the rest of the project to learn how to build the rest of the square gazebo.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the diy square gazebo.
