This step by step woodworking project is about large outdoor double chair bench plans. This wood project is ideal for your backyard, if you want to have both a comfy chair and a very useful table. You can easily adjust the dimensions and the design of the project, so you match it with the style of the rest of your backyard furniture. See my other DIY projects HERE.
We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. PDF downloadable plans with premium features in the Store.

How to build a double chair bench
Cut the components for the seat frame from 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 18″ long components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.
Build the legs for the double chair bench from 2×4 lumber. Cut both ends of the back legs at 75 degrees and smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Attach the 2×4 armrest support to the top of the legs, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws for rigid joints. Add waterproof glue to the joints for a professional result.
Attach the sides to the seat of the bench. Align everything making sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the seat frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs.
Build the backrest supports from 2×4 lumber. Round the exposed corner with a jigsaw.
Attach the backrest supports to the seat frame, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the backrest supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the seat frame.
Attach 1×4 slats to the backrest supports. Leave even gaps between the slats by placing 1/2″ pieces of plywood between them. Drill pilot holes and use 1 5/8″ screws.
Attach the 1×4 slats to the seat of the bench. Lock them into place with 1 5/8″ screws, after drilling pilot holes.
Build the armrests from 1×4 lumber. Round the front end of the armrests with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a professional result. Secure the armrests into place with 1 5/8″ screws, after drilling pilot holes.
Attach 2×4 legs to the middle of the double chair bench. Make sure the corners are square and plumb them. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the seat frame.
Attach 2×4 slats to the front and back of the double chair bench. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the slats and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws.
Attach 1×6 slats to the table. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws.
Fill the holes with wood putty and let it harden for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper and apply a few coats of paint and stain.
This is a nice project for backyard patio. This is a large bench split into two chairs and it also features a middle table. If you like my project, don’t forget to SHARE it on Facebook and Pinterest.

Nice information. I found a nice piece of mesquite that I made into a coffee table for my son’s apartment at Texas A&M. I’d love to send you a picture.
