How to build a tree bench

This step by step diy project is about how to build a tree bench. Building a tree bench is a wonderful project for any backyard, as it will enhance the look of your property, while requiring a small investment. A bench with a hexagonal shape is both easy to build and beautiful, so all you need to do is choose the right plans for the style of your property and buy quality materials.

There are many things that you should know before starting the construction of a tree bench. Therefore, you could build a bench with back support or a basic seat bench, according to your budget and to the design of your property. Always invest in high quality materials, such as redwood, pine or cedar, as the tree bench will be exposed to bad weather and sunlight.

This project doesn’t require complex woodworking skills, so any person with basic knowledge in the field should get the job done in less than a weekend. Adjust the size of the bench to your needs before beginning the construction project. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to enhance the bond of the structure. Fill the holes with putty if you want to get a professional result. PDF downloadable plans with premium features in the Store.

Aligning the posts

Aligning the posts

The first step of the garden project is to build the frame of the tree bench. As you can see in the image, you need to cut the posts at the proper size, according to your needs, and attach 2×4 supports to their top. Drill pilot holes and plumb the posts before inserting the screws through the supports into the legs.

Installing the slats

Installing the slats

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the seat slats to the frame. Cut both ends of the 2×6 slats at 60 degrees, by using a professional saw, if you want to get a neat appearance.

Smart Tip: Align the components at both ends and lock them to the supports with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Countersink the head of the screws before inserting the screws.

Attaching the trims

Afterwards, we recommend you to enhance the look of the tree bench by attaching the trims to the exterior of the slats. Therefore, cut the ends of the 2×4 slats at 60 degrees, as shown in the plans. Attach the trims to the bench and lock them into place with finishing nails and waterproof glue. Smooth the exposed edges with a router or a sand-block.

In this image you can see the structure of the tree bench. If you align all the components in a professional manner, the end result will be astonishing, otherwise it might not raise up to your expectations. Place a spirit level on the slats to check if they are perfectly horizontal.

Lastly, you should take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with putty and let it dry out for several hours, before smoothing the surface with sandpaper. Make sure all the screws are inserted properly and the components aligned at both ends.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay. Afterwards, all you have to do is to enjoy the wood bench and the shade of the tree, especially during the summer days. PDF downloadable plans with premium features in the Store.
