This step by step diy woodworking project is about 12 ft heavy double hammock stand. I have designed this wood stand so you can hang your double hammock and have some fun in the garden. The stand features lots of braces to handle all the lateral and longitudinal movements. You can adjust the size of the stand if you want to use it for shorter hammocks. Double check all the joints each season, to make sure they haven’t been damaged by the elements.
As you will see in this article, you don’t need big trees to set your hammock. On the contrary, you can move it wherever you want, if you decide to build a wood stand. Strange as it may seem, a hammock stand is a straight-forward project, but your just need to select the right plans for your needs. Moreover, invest in quality and durable lumber, such as cedar, pine or redwood. PDF downloadable plans with premium features in the Store.

Building a wood stand for a double hammock
The first step of the outdoor project is to build the two beams for the base of the hammock stand. Make the two notches to the beams using a circular saw. Make parallel cuts inside the marked areas and then remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the recess with sandpaper.
Use 4×4 lumber for the supports. Make a 30 degree cut to the posts. Fit the supports between the two 2×4 beams. You need to set the posts 17″ from the ends of the beams.
Use speed clamps to lock the beams to the posts, before inserting pilot holes through the beams and posts. Insert 7″ carriage bolts to assemble the frame of the hammock stand. Use 2 bolts for each joint.
Fit the 2×4 supports under the base of the hammock stand. Center the supports to the frame slots, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place.
Use 4×4 diagonal braces for the frame of the hammock stand. Make the angle cuts to both ends of the braces and then lock them to the hammock stand with carriage bolts and screws.
In order to add more strength to the heavy duty stand, we will also install braces to the back of the supports. Make the 60 degree angle cut to one end of the brace and then lock it to the frame with screws.
Next, we will tackle the lateral movement of the stand and install braces. Use 2x4s for the braces and make 45 degree cuts at both ends. Fit the braces to the frame of the stand. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock the diagonal braces to the frame of the stand.
Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of stain over the components to make the stand pop out and to protect the components from the elements (you can also use pressure treated lumber for the base components at least).
This 12 ft wide stand is designed for a double hammock, and thus it is really strong. The stand has been designed to tackle properly the lateral movement and longitudinal movement.
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Insert metal eye screws to the top of the supports, making sure they are placed symmetrically. Hang the hammock and check if it needs any adjustments. The hammock I recommend you in the materials list comes with all the hardware needed for the job. If you choose another product, make sure you also buy the eye screws, the hooks and the chain.

Hey, thank you for the over all plan. The only thing missing is the number and diameter of the screws and lag bolts. Hopefully, I counted correctly from the plans. I’ll know by the end of the day!
The number of the bolts, screws is available in the Premium version of the plans, available in the SHOP.
