Buidling the sides of the cabinet

Building the sides of the cabinet

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the cabinet. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the legs out of 2×2 lumber. Cut the panels out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the sides and to the top of the plywood piece. Fit the plywood piece between the legs and secure it into place with 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Attaching the back wall

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the back to the cabinet. Drill pocket holes along the sides and to the top of the 3/4″ plywood back. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws.

Building the supports

Building the supports

Cut the supports out of 3/4″ plywood, making sure you pay attention to the details described in the diagram. Make notches to the four corners of the supports and smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Drill pocket holes along the sides of the supports and secure them to the side components by using galvanized screws. Align the supports with great care, making sure the corners are right-angled. Place the supports equally-spaced if you want to get a professional result.

Center the frame of the cabinet to the top component. Secure the frame to the top with galvanized screws and add glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure.

Building the drawers

Building the drawers

Building the drawers for the tall cabinet is a straight-forward process, as you need to cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood and lock them together properly. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side components and secure them to the perpendicular components with screws. Leave no gaps between the components, if you want to get the job done in a professional manner. Apply paste wax to the bottom of the drawer, in order to help them slide smoothly.

Fitting the drawers

Fit the drawer into place and make sure they open and close smoothly. Work with attention and take care of the finishing touches.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the tall cabinet.
