Materials

  • A – 4 pieces of 1×12 lumber – 24″ long BOARD
  • B – 2 pieces of 1×2 lumber – 24″ long, 1 pieces – 12 3/4″ long TRIMS
  • C – 1 piece of 1×4 lumber – 12 3/4″ long SHELF
  • D – 2 piece of metal hooks HOOKS

  • 1 piece of 1×12 lumber – 1 ft
  • 1 piece of 1×2 lumber – 6 ft
  • 1 piece of 1×4 lumber – 2 ft
  • hooks
  • 2 1/2″ screws
  • 1 1/4″ screws
  • glue, stain
  • wood filler

Tools

  • Safety gloves, glasses, Miter saw, jigsaw
  • Chalk line, tape measure, spirit level, carpentry pencil
  • Drill machinery and drill bits

Tips

  • Apply several coats of wood stain to the wooden components
  • Fill the holes with wood filler and smooth the surface

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the board out of 1×12 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the piece of lumber and get  the job done using a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues using a cleaner. Afterwards, apply chalkboard spray paint to the board and let it dry out for several hours.

The next step of the project is to attach the 1×2 trims to the chalkboard, as shown in the diagram. Cut the trims at the right size and secure them to the chalkboard using 1 1/2″ finishing nails and waterproof glue. Smooth the exposed edges and remove the residues.

Build the shelf out of 1×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the piece of lumber and create the notches using a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges using sandpaper and drill pocket holes, as described in the diagram.

Attach the shelf to the chalkboard, align it at both ends and secure it to the structure by using 1 1/4′ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure there are no gaps between the components.

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the hooks to the bottom of the chalkboard. Align the hooks with attention, in order to make sure the chalkboard will have a symmetrical appearance.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the final touches. Therefore, you need fill all the holes with a good filler and let the compound to dry out properly, before sanding the wooden surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Smart Tip: Clean the residues with a dry cloth, before staining the chalkboard with the appropriate products for your tastes and needs.
