This step by step diy woodworking project is about desk hutch plans. If you want to create additional storage space for your desk, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions shown in this woodworking project. In addition, don’t forget to check out the rest of the desk plans, as there are several detailed projects that could give you a few creative ideas.
If you don’t have an extensive expertise in the field, we strongly recommend you to pay attention to the instructions and to plan every step of the project from the very beginning. Invest in high quality materials, such as pine, cedar or redwood and make sure they are in a very good condition. Smooth the edges after making the cuts, in order to get a highly professional look.
If you want to build a hutch that matches the style of the rest of the furniture and suits your needs, we recommend you to adjust the size and the design of the hutch. Make sure you cut the components at the right size, otherwise they might not fit together properly. Work with attention and pre-drill the components before inserting the screws, in order to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Desk Hutch Plans
Â
The first step of the project is to build the frame of the hutch. As you can easily notice in the image, we recommend you to build the sides and the top of the hutch out of 1×12 slats. Cut the components at the right size and lock them together with pocket screws. Drill pocket holes at the top of the side components and at both ends of the bottom brace.
Â
Â
The next step of the project is to attach the shelves to the top of the wooden hutch, as it can be seen in the image. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the shelf and at both ends of the partitions before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints, if you want to create a rigid structure and check if the corners are right-angled, by using a carpentry square.
Â
Â
Attach a piece of 1/2″ plywood to the back of the hutch and lock it into place with finishing nails. Add glue to the edges of the frame, in order to enhance the bond of the components.
Â
Â
One of the last steps of the project is to attach the trims to the top of the desk hutch. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to take accurate measurements and to cut the ends of the 1×2 trims at 45 degrees, as in the plans.
Â
Â
Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
