Building the sides of the bench

Building the sides of the bench

The first step of the project is to build the sides of the bench. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make 10 degree-cuts to both ends of the legs. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the legs and secure them to the top support with 2 1/2″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the frame.

Attaching the supports

Attaching the supports

Fit the 2×4 braces to the sides of the bench, in order to reinforce the structure. Cut both ends of the braces at 80 degrees, drill pocket holes at both ends and secure them to the legs with galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and leave no gaps between the components, in order to create a proper structure.

Fitting the stetcher

Fitting the stretcher

Cut the wooden stretcher at the right size and lock it to the sides with galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are square before driving the screws in.

Fitting the support slats

Fitting the support slats

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 2×4 slats and secure them to the top supports with 2 1/2″ screws. Place the support slats equally-spaced, in order to support the seat slats in a professional manner.

Cut both ends of the trims at 45 degrees and secure them to the structure with galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes through the trims and secure them to the components with 2 1/2″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the bench.
