How to build a train table

This step by step diy woodworking project is about how to build a train table. Materials

A – 4 pieces of 1×3 lumber – 20″ long, 4 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 20″ long LEGS
B – 2 piece of 1×4 lumber – 49 1/2″ long, 2 pieces – 25 1/2″ long FRAME
C – 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 24″x48 long TABLETOP

2 1/2″ screws

Building a train table

Building the tabletop

The first step of the project is to build the tabletop of the train table. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to drill pocket holes along the edges of the 3/4″ plywood and to insert screws into the side trims. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure.

Attaching the 1×4 trims

Continue the project by fitting the rest of the components of the frame into place. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut both ends of the trims at 45 degrees and to lock them into place with screws or finishing nails.

Attaching the legs

Build the legs of the table out of 2×4 lumber and attach them to the frame of the table with galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes through the legs before inserting the screws into the frame, to prevent the wood from splitting. Leave no gaps between the components and enhance the bond of the structure with glue.

How to build a train table

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
