This step by step woodworking project is about 2 cord firewood shed plans. This is a sturdy shed that can hold up to 2 cords of wood. The shed features walls on 3 sides and a large front opening. In addition, the shed has a lean to roof and the floor is lifted from the ground with the 3 skids. The plans are PDF downloadable and come with full Cut / Shopping lists. Remember that you need to read the local building codes before selecting the right location for the shed and before building the shed. See my other DIY projects HERE. See all my shed plans HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. PDF downloadable plans, for this project, with premium features in the Store.

How to build a 2 cord wood shed

Floor frame

Floor frame

First, you need to build the floor frame. Drill pilot holes through the 8 ft joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Align the edges flush and check if the corners are square. Place the joists every 16″ on center.

Fitting the skids

Fitting the skids

Use 4×4 lumber for the skids. It would be a great idea to use pressure treated lumber. Fit the skids under the floor frame, drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock them together tightly.

Fitting the floor slats

Fitting the floor slats

Next, fit the 2×4 slats to the floor frame. Fit a piece of 3/4″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps. Align the edges at both ends, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them to the floor frame.

Fitting the posts to the front

Fitting the posts to the front

Use 2×4 lumber for the posts. Cut the posts at the right dimensions and attach them to the corners of the floor frame, as shown in the diagram. Use a spirit level to plumb the posts. Drill pilot holes and insert 3″ lag screws to lock them to the floor frame.

Fit the 2×4 posts to the back of the floor frame. Plumb the posts with a spirit level, drill pilot holes and insert 3″ lag screws.

Fitting the support beams

Fitting the support beams

Use 2×6 lumber for the support beams. Fit the beams to the front and to the back of the shed, leaving 10 1/2″ overhangs on both sides. Drill pilot holes and insert 3″ lag screws into the posts. Use a spirit level to make sure the beams are perfectly horizontal.

Rafters

Rafters

Next, build the rafters for the roof from 2×4 lumber. Use a miter saw to make angle cuts. Use a circular saw for the birdsmouth cuts.

Fitting the rafters

Fitting the rafters

Fit the rafters to the support beams. Place the supports every 24″ on center. Use rafter ties and 1 1/2″ structural screws to secure the rafters into place tightly.

Side walls slats

Side walls slats

Use 1×6 slats for the side walls. Make the angle cut to the slat that goes to the top. Place 3″ spacers between the slats, to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to secure the slats to the posts.

Back wall slats

Back wall slats

Attach the 1×6 slats to the back of the firewood shed. Place the 3″ spacers to create even gaps between the slats. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats into place.

Fitting the purlins

Fitting the purlins

Fit the 1×4 purlins to the top of the shed. Place the purlins every 12″ on center. Use 1 5/8″ screws to secure the slats to the rafters.

Roof trims

Roof trims

Attach the 1×6 trims to the front and to the back of the shed roof. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws, to lock them into place tightly.

Next, attach the metal roof sheets to the top of the firewood shed. Align the edges and secure the sheets to the purlins with roofing screws.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components to protect the shed from the weather elements and to enhance the look of the shed.
