This step by step woodworking project is about sandbox with bench made from 2x4s plans. This is a super simple project that you can build in one weekend using common tools and materials. You can easily make adjustments to the sandbox to suit your needs (size, features, designed and so on). If you have a higher budget, invest in weather resistant lumber. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

How to build a sandbox from 2x4s

Cutting Cutting the side slatsthe side slats

Cutting the side slats

The first step of the project is to cut the box slats at the dimensions shown in the diagram. Use a miter saw to make the angle cuts to one end of the slats.

Corner supports

Next, you need to make the corner supports for the sandbox. Use a miter saw to make the 10 degree cuts to 2 supports.

Assembling the frames

Assembling the frames

Next, is time to assemble the two frames together. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes through the long slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Stack the two frames one on top of the other and leave no gaps between them.

Fit the corner supports to the the frames, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frames. Leave no gaps between the frames for a professional result.

Next, attach the 2×4 slats to the sandbox to build the seat. Place a piece of 1/4″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps. Align the slats at both ends, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components. If you really want to have a long lasting table, apply a few coats of poly or use cedar from the very beginning.
