This step by step woodworking project is about 5×5 gable shed roof plans. This is the PART 2 of the 5×5 garden shed project, where I show you how to build the gable roof for the shed. Building the roof for the shed is really easy if you follow my tips and diagrams with attention. Read the local codes before starting the project, so you comply with the requirements. We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Materials
- G – 2 pieces of T1-11 siding – 48″x96″ long, 2 pieces – 12″x87 1/4″ long SIDING
- H – 10 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 40″ long RAFTERS
- I – 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 40″x48″ long, 2 pieces – 12″x40″ long ROOF
- J – 2 4 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 40 1/4″ long, 2 pieces of 1×6 lumber – 64 1/4″ long TRIMS
- K – 50 sq ft of tar paper, 50 sq ft of asphalt shingles ROOFING

5×5 Gable Shed Roof – DIY Plans
Building the rafters
Use 2×4 lumber for the rafters. Mark the cut lines on the beams and then get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Fitting the gusset
Use 1/2″ plywood for the gussets. Use a circular saw to make the cuts, as shown in the diagram. Add the gussets to the rafters and lock them into place with 1 5/8″ screws.
Fitting the rafters
Fit the rafters to the top of the shed. Place the rafters every 16″ on center, equally spaced, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock the rafters into place tightly. Alternatively, you can use rafter ties to lock the trusses to the plates.
Front wall sheets
Use T1-11 siding sheets for the gable ends. Mark the cut lines on the sheets and then get the job done with a saw. Align the edges with attention and insert 6-8d nails, every 8″ along the framing.
Roof sheets
Fit 3/4″ plywood sheets to the roof of the shed. Align the sheets with attention, making sure you leave no gaps between them. Insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the sheets into place, every 8″ along the rafters.
Building the front and back trims
Use 2×6 lumber for the front and back roof trims. Cut the trims as shown in the diagram. Attach the trims to the gable ends and then lock them into place with 2 1/2″ screws.
Side roof trims
Fit 1×6 trims to the sides of the roof. Align the edges with attention and then insert 2″ nails to lock them into place tightly.
Fitting the roofing
Cover the roofing sheets with tar paper. Install the tar paper starting with the bottom of the roof and make sure the strips overlap for at least 2″. In addition, fit a 12” strip over the top ridge. Install the shingles starting with the left- bottom of the roof, after fitting the starting course. Use roofing tacks to secure the shingles into place.
