12×10 Gable Shed – Free DIY Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about free 12×10 garden shed plans. This is a compact storage shed that is really simple to build, as it doesn’t require complex skills. The shed features double front doors and a gable roof with a medium slope. Remember that you need to read the local building codes before selecting the right location for the shed and before building the shed. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a 12×10 shed

Materials

• A – 4 pieces of 4×4 lumber – 10″ long SKIDS
• B – 2 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 10″ long, 9 pieces – 141″long FLOOR
• C – 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 48″x96″ long, 2 pieces – 48″x48″ long, 1 piece – 24″x96″ long, 1 piece – 24″x48″ long FLOORING
• D – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 120″ long, 1 piece – 113″ long, 8 pieces – 91 1/2″ long 2xSIDE WALL
• E – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 137″ long, 1 piece – 144″ long, 7 pieces – 91 1/2″ long BACK WALL

How to build a 12×10 gable shed

Floor frame

The first step of the project is to build the floor frame. Cut the joists from 2×6 lumber at the right dimensions and then lay them on a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Place the joists every 16″ on center.

Fitting the skids

Fit 4×4 skids under the floor frame so you can lift the shed from the ground and keep it protected from moisture. Use rafter ties to lock the skids to the floor frame.

Fitting the floor sheets

Fit 3/4″ plywood sheets to the floor frame. Lay the sheets and align the edges flush. Leave no gaps between the sheets and insert 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the framing.

Front wall frame

Build the front wall from 2×4 lumber. Cut the plates and the studs at the right dimensions and then lay them on a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs and make sure the corners are square. Use 2×6 lumber and 1/2″ plywood for the double header. You can adjust the size of the door opening to suit your needs.

Side wall frame

Build the side wall frames from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center. Place double studs to both ends of the walls and make sure the corners are square.

Back wall frame

Build the back wall for the shed in the same manner described above. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center.

Assembling the frame of the shed

Fit the wall frames to the floor of the 12×10 gable shed. Align the edges flush and drill pilot holes through the bottom plates. Insert 3 1/2″ screws to secure the walls to the floor frame. Moreover, you need to lock the adjacent walls together tightly. Make sure the corners are square, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws.

Side wall – panels

Attach the 4’x8′ T1-11 siding to the side walls of the shed. Align the edges flush with the top and insert 6-8d nails, every 8″ along the framing. Leave no gaps between the sheets, for a professional result.

Front wall panels

Fit the siding sheets to the front of the shed, as well. Cut the sheets so you can fit them around the door opening. Align the edges flush and insert 6-8d nails, every 8″ along the framing.

Back wall siding

Fit the siding sheets to the back of the shed. Use 6-8d nails to lock the sheets into place. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional result.
