This step by step woodworking project is about free a-frame swing plans. I have designed this small outdoor swing frame, so you can make one for your kids. In addition, the frame is so sturdy that you can use it yourself, as well. Remember that you can easily make a few adjustments to the swing, so you build it to your own needs.
There are many designs and plans you could choose from, so you should take a look on more projects before starting the actual project. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a simple but sturdy design, this project might be the solution to your needs. Moreover, you could build all the components from 2×4 lumber, as to save both time and money. Make sure you check all the dimensions before making the cuts, otherwise the components might not fit together easily. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build an a-frame outdoor swing
The first step of the project is to build the posts for the outdoor swing. Use 4×4 posts for the supports. As you can easily see in the plans, you will fit the posts about 2′ in concrete.
Cut the top of the posts using the pattern described in the diagram. Mark the cut lines on the top of the 4×4 posts and then get the job done with a saw. Remove the yellow area from the posts. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.
The nest step of the project is to attach the legs on a level surface and to align them properly. Use 4×4 lumber for the horizontal braces. Cut both ends of the supports at 73 degrees and then drill pocket holes at both ends. Use screws to secure the lock the supports to the posts. Add waterproof glue to the joints for a stronger bond.
Dig the holes into the ground (2-3 feet), enough so you can fit the posts. Use a spirit level to plumb the sides and lock them into place with braces, while you pour the concrete. Fit the 4×4 support to the top of the A-frames. Make sure the corners are square.
Drill pilot holes and insert 5 1/2″ screws through the post into the supports, and 3 1/2″ screws through the supports into the top beam.
Build the diagonal braces from 4×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the braces and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.
Fit the braces to the frame of the outdoor swing stand. Drill pilot holes through the braces and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock it into place tightly.
Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Make sure the corners are square.
