This step by step woodworking project is about how to build a simple plant stand. I designed this plant stand so it can be moved easily and it doesn’t require a lot of materials, tools or effort. If you need a multi purpose basic bench that can be used as a plant stand or as a small entry bench, you should take a look over the instructions.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a plant stand

Materials

• D – 13 pieces of 1×3 lumber – 13 1/2″ long SHELVES

Indoor Tiered Plant Stand Plans

The first step of the project is to build the sides for the indoor plant stand. Cut the components from 1×2 lumber at the dimensions shown in the diagram. Align the edges making sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the horizontal supports and insert 1 1/2″ screws into the legs. Add glue to the joints for a professional bond.

You can adjust the distance between the sides so it suits your particular needs.

Build the supports for the shelves using 1×2 lumber. Round the ends of the supports and smooth the cut edges with 120-grit sandpaper.

Attach the shelves supports to the frame of the plant stand. Drill pilot holes through the braces and insert 1 1/2″ screws into the legs. Take accurate measurements for a professional result.

Continue the project by attaching the 1×3 slats to the supports, as shown in the diagram. You can place a scrap piece of 1/4″plywood between the slats so you create even gaps. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 1 1/2″ screws to lock everything tightly together.

Sand everything throughly with 120-220 grit sandpaper before staining or painting the wooden components. Protect everything against the elements with a few coats of spar varnish.

How to make a 3 tier plant stand

First of all, I cut all the legs and the braces so I can assemble the sides for the tiered plant stand. If you don’t have a proper workshop or you like working outside, I strongly recommend you buying one of these folding workbenches. They are super useful when assembling medium sized projects and they don’t take a lot of space.

Next, I assembled the sides for the tiered plant stand. I aligned the edges with attention and drilled pilot holes before inserting the 1 1/2″ screws. In addition, I added waterproof glue to enhance the bond of the components.

Next, I assembled the plant stand by fitting the rest of the braces into place. I align the components with attention, drilled pilot holes and inserted the 1 1/2″ screws to lock everything together tightly.

I attached the supports for the bottom shelf and then the ones for the middle shelf. I used a carpentry square to make sure the corners are square before inserting the screws.

After assembling the frame of the plant stand, my project started to take shape nicely. I like the proportions and I think it will be a nice addition to my home and even to my backyard. If you want to go for a two tone colors for this project, this is the ideal time to paint the frame.

I attached the slats to the shelves, starting with the top. I aligned the slats at both ends and then used spacers to create even gaps. I drilled pilot holes at both ends and inserted 1 1/2″ screws to lock slats into place.

I stained the slats before locking them to the supports. After installing them to the frame of the tiered plant stand I applied a few coats of spar varnish to enhance the look of the project.

This project came out better than I have envisioned it when designing the plans. I like the nice and unique shape of the plant stand.
