This step by step diy project is about adirondack bench plans. If you want to create a beautiful backyard with lots of interesting areas, building an unique adirondack bench will certainly help you. Don’t forget to take a look over the rest of the projects and to adjust the design and size of the bench to suit your needs.

You should always plan everything from the very beginning and to adjust the size of the adirondack love seat to your needs, while you can still use the woodworking techniques described in this project. Taking into account the simple design, this bench can match the style of any home. Mark the cut lines on the slats before making the cuts and use a jigsaw to get the job done.

There are a few tips that you should take into account, if you want to get a professional result. Therefore, take accurate measurements and use professional tool when making the cuts or when drilling pilot holes. Align the components at both ends and add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to create a rigid structure. Round the exposed edges with sandpaper or by using a good router. Building the side legs

Building the side legs

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the back legs of the adirondack chair. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the 1×8 slat. Use a jigsaw to make the curved cuts and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Fitting the front legs

Next, attach the 1×4 front legs to the back legs. Drill pilot holes through the back legs and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the vertical components. Recess the back leg 3/4″ from the front edge of the vertical components. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance their bond.

Fitting the front legs

Build the front support out of 1×8 lumber, but adjust the width to 6 3/4″. Use a jigsaw to make the arches cut to the support. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the front support and secure it to the front legs using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled.

Smart Tip: Drill pilot holes through the support and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the back legs. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Building the seat

Building the seat

Build the seat of the bench out of 1×4 lumber. Cut the slats at the right size and place them equally-spaced, in order to create a symmetrical appearance. Drill pilot holes through the slats and secure them to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws.

Backrest slats

Backrest slats

Building the backrest is the trickiest step of the whole project. Lay the 1×4 slats on a level surface and mark the curved cut line before making the cuts. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Smart Tip: Place a 3/4″ wooden block between the slats to make sure they are equally-spaced.

Next, fit the 1×3 supports to the slats, making sure the edges are perfectly aligned. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4′ screws. add glue to the joints, in order to enhance the bond of the components.

Continue the project by fitting the 2×2 support to the backrest, as described in the diagram. Make sure you follow the instructions in the diagram, for a professional result.

Installing the armrest supports

Installing the armrest supports

Build the armrest supports out of 1×4 lumber. Fit the supports to the bench and lock it into place using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the supports are perfectly horizontal.

Backrest joint

Pay attention to the joint between the backrest supports and the armrest support. Drive in a few 2 1/2″ screws in order to add strength to the overall structure.

Fitting the armrests

Next, attach the 1×4 armrests to the structure. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the structure, if you want to get the job done in a professional manner.

Fitting the armrest trims

Fitting the armrest trims

If you want to enhance the look of the adirondack bench, we recommend you to fit 1×2 trims to the armrests. Cut the trims in a decorative manner and secure them into place using 1 1/4″ screws, after drilling pocket holes.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours.  Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.

Smart tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Check out the rest of the furniture plans featured on our website.
