This step by step diy woodworking project is about square gazebo roof plans. This article features detailed plans for a building a gazebo gable roof. The 12×12 gazebo roof requires common working techniques and materials. It is essential to invest in high quality materials, that are also water-resistant, such as pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw and smooth the cut edges with a sand block. Don’t forget to ask a skilled friend to assist you during the project, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. You need someone to hold the components into place, while you drive the screws in.

Building a square gazebo

Building the rafters

First of all, we recommend you to build the rafters for the square gazebo. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to use 2×6 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the rafters and get the job done with a circular saw. Make notches to the bottom of the rafters in order to fit them into place easier. Cut both ends of the rafters at 60 degrees, by using a saw having a sharp blade.

Fitting the rafters

After building the rafters, you need to install them to the square gazebo. Drill pilot holes at both ends and secure them to the top plates and to the ridge by using galvanized screws. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance the bond.

Fitting the rafters

Install the rest of the rafters in the same manner, but make sure you follow the instructions described in the diagram. It is essential to place the rafters equally-spaced, if you want to get a professional result.

Building the gable ends

In order to enhance the look of the square gazebo, we recommend you to fit plywood panels to the gable ends. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheets and get the job done with a circular saw. Align the edges with great care and secure the panel to the structure using 1 1/4″ screws.

Fitting the trims

In order to enhance the look of the square gazebo, we recommend you to fit the 1×6 trims to the ends of the rafters, as described in the diagram. Align the components with great care and secure them to the rafters using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Fitting the roofing sheets

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the rafters, as described in the diagram. Leave no gaps between the sheets and secure them to the rafters using 1 1/4″ galvanized screws, every 8″ along the rafters. Using tongue and groove sheets will help you save time and get a professional result. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the gazebo, using the same woodworking techniques.

Attaching the roofing

You could fit asphalt shingles to protect the gazebo, as it is a straight forward solution. Therefore, install roofing felt over the roofing sheets, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under. Place a starting course at the bottom of the roof, before installing the asphalt shingles. Always read the manufacturing instructions before starting the installation, as there are several aspects that differ.

Smart Tip: The first course should star with a 3 tab shingle, the second course with a 2 1/2 tab , the third course with a 2 tab, the forth course with a 1 1/2 tab, the fifth course with a 1 tab, the sixth course with a 1/2 tab. Repeat the process from the beginning, starting with the seventh course. Don’t forget that the shingles should overhang from the drip edge about a 1/4″. In addition, secure the asphalt shingles to the roof decking with tacks.
