In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

Building a wooden sled

Building the skids

Building the skids

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the skids for the wooden sled. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you have to mark the cut lines on the 1×6 slats and to get the job done with a jigsaw. Make sure the blade of the saw goes exactly over the cut lines. Smooth the exposed edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Building the braces

Building the braces

Building the braces for the sled is a straight forward process, as you have to use 1×3 slats. If you want to enhance the look of the braces, we recommend you to make some curved cuts to the slats, as shown in the diagram. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Fitting the braces

Fitting the braces

Continue the project by fitting the braces to the wooden skids, as described in the diagram. Place the braces equally-spaced otherwise the structure won’t support your weight in a professional manner. Drill pilot holes through the braces and insert 2 1/2″ screws to create a rigid structure.

Fitting the seat slats

Fitting the seat slats

Build the seat slats out of 1×4 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the slats and get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and drill pilot holes through the slats before securing them to the supports by using 1 1/4″ screws.

Building the front support

Build the front support out of a scrap piece of wood, in order to get a professional result. Use a jigsaw to make the curved cuts and smooth the surface with fine-grit sandpaper.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.
