How to build a simple firewood rack

This diy step by step diy project is about how to build a simple firewood rack plans. A good friend of mine needed a cheap way to store the firewood, so I came up with this design. If you want to learn more about building a sturdy firewood rack, pay attention to the detailed instructions shown in this tutorial. I managed to build this diy wood rack under 15 $, using common materials and tools.

You should always plan everything from the very beginning, in order to prevent costly mistakes and to save time. If this is your first project, you need a friend to assist you while assembling the rack. Invest in high quality lumber and plywood, as the components will be exposed to bad weather. Protect the components with appropriate paint or stain.

There are a few tips that you should take into account, if you want to get a professional result. Therefore, take accurate measurements and use professional tools when making the cuts or when drilling pilot holes. Align the components at both ends and add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to create a rigid structure.

If you are looking for a quick and cheap way to store the firewood, I recommend you take a look over my project. I built this wood rack in under 2 hours and all materials cost me about 15 dollars. You can adjust the dimensions for the rack and add a few cross-braces, if you will store a lot of wood. Use pressure treated lumber if you want o use the rack for many years in a row.

Building a frame

Building a frame

First of all, you need to assemble the frame for the firewood shed. Cut the components at the right dimensions out of 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the middle supports. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps for a professional result. Make sure the edges are flush, before inserting the screws.

Attaching the legs

Build the posts out of 2×2 lumber. Attach the posts to the frame of the rack, making sure the corners are square. In addition, use a spirit level to check if the posts are plumb. Drill pilot holes through the joists and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the posts.

Fitting the top supports

Attach the 2×2 supports to the top of the posts. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the posts.

Fitting the back slats

One of the lats steps of the project is to attach the 2×4 rails to the back of the rack. Use 2 1/2″ screws to secure the components to the vertical posts, after drilling some pilot holes.

First of all, I assembled the frame for the firewood rack. I cut the components out of 2×4 lumber. I drilled pilot holes and inserted 2 1/2″ galvanized screws to lock them together tightly. I also added waterproof glue to the joints to get a more durable bond. Make sure the edges are flush before driving the screws in.

Next, I installed the intermediary supports to the frame of the firewood shed. Make sure you secure them properly to the frame in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.
