8×10 Pig House Roof Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about free pig house roof plans. This is PART 2 of the pig shed project, where I show you how to build the roof for the structure. The lean to roof has a nice slope which will drain the water and snow easily. Remember that you should read a few books about raising pigs so you ensure them the right living conditions. This shelter can be easily moved from one location to another, using a tractor. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a pig house

Materials

• F – 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 36″x60″ long, 2 pieces – 48″x35 1/4″ long, 1 piece – 24″x35 1/2″ long, 2 pieces – 48″x50 1/4″ long, 2 pieces – 48″x63″ long SIDING
• E – 9 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 120″ long RAFTERS
• E – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 5 1/2″ long, 2 pieces – 11 3/4″ long, 2 pieces – 18 1/4″ long SUPPORTS
• G – 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 48″x96″ long, 2 pieces – 31 1/2″x48″ long, 1 piece – 24″x31 1/2″ long, 1 piece – 24″x96″ long ROOF
• H – 110 sq ft of tar paper, 110 sq ft of asphalt shingles ROOFING

• 10 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 10′
• 4 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 4’x8′
• 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 4’x10′
• 110 sq ft of tar paper, 110 sq ft of asphalt shingles
• 3 1/2″ screws, 1 1/4″ screws
• 6d nails

Building a 8×10 pig house roof

Building the rafters

The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the roof of the pig house. Mark the cut lines on the slats and then get the job done with a saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Fitting the rafters

Fit the rafters on the top of the pig house and place them equally-spaced. Align the edges with attention and lock them into place with rafter ties.

Side roof supports

Fit the 2×4 supports to the sides of the pig house roof. Fit the supports to the sides, drill pocket holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Fitting the side siding panels

Attach the T1-11 siding panels to the sides of the pig house, after cutting them to the right dimensions and shape. Align the edges with attention, leave no gaps between the components and insert 6-8d nails every 8″, along the frame.

Fitting the roof sheets

Attach the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the roof of the pig house. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws into the rafters. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional result.

Fitting the roofing

Cover the roof with tar paper and then install shingles, to seal the roof. Install the drip edges and read the manufacturer’s instructions when installing the roofing. Alternatively, you can use metal sheets to save some money.

Pig House Plans

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint to enhance the look of the pig house and to protect the components from decay.

I recommend you to read a few specialized books about raising pigs, so you select the right location for the shelter and so you can make a few upgrades that will help the animals live properly.
