Large Chicken Coop Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about free large chicken coop plans. If you are set on growing chickens for eggs or for meat, you should check out my step by step instructions and diagrams for building a 8×10 coop. We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a large chicken coop

Materials

• A – 4 pieces of 4×4 lumber – 12″ long SKIDS
• B – 2 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 120″ long, 6 pieces – 93″long FLOOR FRAME
• C – 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 48″x96″ long, 2 pieces – 24″x48″ long FLOORING
• D – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 89″ long, 5 pieces – 84″ long, 1 piece – 22 1/2″ long 2xSIDE WALL
• E – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 120″ long, 4 pieces – 84″ long, 2 pieces – 113″ long, 4 pieces – 37 1/2″ long BACK WALL
• F – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 120″ long, 2 pieces – 44″ long, 10 pieces – 84″ long, 6 pieces – 38 1/2″ long, 4 pieces – 24″ long, 6 pieces – 10 1/2″ long, 2 pieces – 78 1/2″ long, 8 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 27″ long, 2 pieces – 35″ long FRONT WALL

• 10 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 8′
• 1 pieces of 4×4 lumber – 8′

• 1/2″ plywood – 5 1/2″x75″
• 3 pieces of 3/4″ plywood – 48″x96″
• 9 pieces of T1-11 – 48″x96″
• 8d nails, 2 1/2″ screws, 3 1/2″ screws
• wood filler , wood glue, stain/paint

Tools

• Safety gloves, glasses
• Miter saw, jigsaw
• Chalk line, tape measure, spirit level, carpentry pencil
• Drill machinery and drill bits

Building a large chicken coop floor plans

Floor frame

First of all, build the frame of the floor from 2×6 lumber. Cut the joists at the right dimensions, as shown in the diagram. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components.

Floor legs

Use 4×4 lumber for the legs. The legs will raise the floor from the ground. Use 3 1/2″ screws to secure the legs into place tightly.

Floor sheets

Attach 3/4″ plywood sheets to the floor frame. Align the edges and leave no gaps between the sheets. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the sheets into place tightly.

Building the coop wall frames

Front wall – frame

Build the front wall frame from 2×4 lumber. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert the screws into the studs. Frame the door and the windows by fitting double headers. Use 2×6 lumber and 1/2″ plywood for the double headers.

Fit 1/2″ plywood between the double studs placed at both ends.

Back wall – frame

Build the back wall from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the top and bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square. Place double studs at both ends of the back wall.

Fit 1/2″ plywood between the double studs placed at both ends.

Side wall – Frame

Use 2×4 lumber for the side walls. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush. To one side wall, fit the green component, so you frame the side small door.

Building the frame of the shed

Fit the wall frames to the floor of the chicken coop. Align the edges flush and plumb them vertically. Drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the floor. Lock the adjacent walls together tightly with 3 1/2″ screws.

Fitting the siding sheets

Side wall siding

Attach 5/8″ T1-11 siding sheets to the sides of the coop. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to lock them into place tightly with 6-8d nails. Insert the nails every 8″ along the framing. Cut the small door opening on one side.

Fitting the front wall siding

Fit the T1-11 siding sheets to the front of the chicken coop. Make cuts to the sheets, so you can fit them into place tightly. Make cuts around the door and window openings.

Back wall siding

Place T1-11 siding sheets to the back of the large chicken coop. Align the sheets with care and then insert 6-8d nails, every 8″ along the framing.
