Building the back legs

Building the back legs

The first step of the project is to build the back legs for the kitchen bench. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to mark the cut lines on a 2×4 slat and to cut out the wooden legs by using a jigsaw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper, making sure the surface is nice and clean.

Building the backrest

Building the backrest

Building the backrest of the wooden bench is the next step of the woodworking project. Therefore, drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal supports and secure them to the legs with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the rails and secure them to the supports with screws.

Building the frame of the bench

Building the frame of the bench

Build the front legs out of 2×2 lumber and the components of the frame out of 1×3 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them to the legs with 1 1/4″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Fitting the bottom braces

Fitting the bottom braces

In order to add strength to the kitchen bench, we recommend you to attach the braces and the stretcher to the bottom. Cut the components out of 2×2 lumber, drill pocket holes at both ends, and fit them into place with 2 1/2″ screws.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

Attach the 1×2 cleats to the interior of the frame, making sure you place them 3/4″ below the top of the components. Secure the cleats into place with screws and waterproof glue.

Attaching the seat slats

Attaching the seat slats

Fit the 1×3 support slats to the cleats and secure them into place with galvanized screws. Make sure you place the slats equally-spaced in order to support the weight properly.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the kitchen bench. If you want to get this plan as a PDF file, please take a look over the GET PDF PLANS button bellow. Thank you for the support!
