Building a Wooden Locker

Building the frame of the locker

Building the frame of the locker

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the locker. Cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood, making sure they are 15 3/4″ wide. Drill pocket holes as described in the diagram and secure them together with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure. Check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws.

Fit the divider inside the frame of the locker, as it has a functional and a structural role. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the divider and secure it into place with galvanized screws, after checking if the corners are right-angled.

Cut a piece of 1/4″ plywood at the dimensions described in the diagram and secure it to the frame with finishing nails and waterproof glue. Make sure the corners are square before inserting the screws. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper in order to get a professional result.

Fitting the supports

Fitting the supports

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the supports to the wooden locker, as shown in the plans. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the frame, making sure there are no gaps between the components.

Attaching the shelves

Attaching the shelves

Building the shelves for the locker is a straight-forward process that will add value to your woodworking project. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we suggest you to secure the cleats to the frame with 1 1/4″ screws, after making sure they are horizontal. Attach the shelves to the cleats, making sure the pieces of plywood fit properly into place. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Building the doors

Building the doors

Build the doors for the locker, out of 3/4″ plywood. Make sure there is a gap of around 1/8″ around the doors otherwise they won’t be able to open and close properly. Take accurate measurements and smooth the edges with sandpaper after making the straight cuts.

Attaching the handles and hinges

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to secure the doors to the frame with metal hinges. In addition, install the handles to the doors, making sure you choose a design that matches the rest of the furniture in your room.
