Building a king platform bed plans

Building the frame of the headboard

Building the frame of the headboard

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the headboard for the king platform bed. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the legs and the horizontal supports out of 2×2 lumber. Use 2×6 lumber for the support beam. Drill pocket holes at top of the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the top support. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal beam and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs, after making sure the edges are flush.

Next, fit the 1×2 supports to the headboard, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs by using 1 1/4″ screws. Place the supports equally-spaced and add glue to the joints. Make sure the corners are square before inserting the screws.

Use 1×6 and 13 slats to build the panel for the headboard. Drill pilot holes through the back supports and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the slats. In addition drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them to the frame of the headboard

Building the footboard

Building the footboard

Build the frame of the footboard out of 2×2 lumber and the panel out of 2×6 lumber. Take accurate measurements and cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw. Drill pocket holes at the top of the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the top support. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slat and fit it between the legs. Add glue to the joints and make sure the edges are flush.

Assembling the frame of the bed

Next, assemble the king platform bed by installing the side slats to the structure, as shown in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 2×8 beams and secure them to the legs. Make sure the edges are flush and the corners are square.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

Fit the 1×6 cleats to the interior sides of the bed frame and the 2×6 support to the middle of the frame, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the cleats and secure them to the frame using appropriate screws and glue. Place the cleats 3/4″ under the top edge of the side supports.

Afterwards, fit the 1×4 support slats to the cleats and secure them into place using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Make sure you place the supports equally-spaced and check if the corners are square after adding each component into place.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the king bed frame.
