This step by step diy project is about building a small deer feeder. This is the second part of the project, where we show you how to build the roof and the door for the deer stand. Follow the instructions and check out the first part of the project to learn more about building the frame of the small deer stand.

You should always plan everything from the very beginning, in order to prevent costly mistakes and to save time. In most of the cases, you need a friend to give you a hand when assembling the deer feeder. Invest in high quality lumber and plywood, as the components will be exposed to bad weather. Protect the components with appropriate paint or stain.

There are a few tips that you should take into account, if you want to get a professional result. Therefore, take accurate measurements and use professional tools when making the cuts or when drilling pilot holes. Align the components at both ends and add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to create a rigid structure. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

Building the roof

Building the roof

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the roof for the deer stand. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to use 3/4″ plywood for the roofing. Build the supports out of 2×4 lumber. Cut both ends of the supports at 80 degrees (10 degree cuts) and secure them to the plywood sheet using 2 1/2″ screws, after drilling pilot holes.

Fitting the roof

Fitting the roof

Fit the roof to the deer stand, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the 2×4 supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame of the deer stand. You could cover the roof of the deer stand using asphalt shingles, to seal it against water leaks.

Building the door

Building the door

Building the door for the deer stand is a straight forward process. Use 2×4 lumber for the frame and 3/4″ plywood for the door panel. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the horizontal supports. Attach the panel to the frame using 1 1/4″ finishing nails.

Use the plywood that you have cut out in the previous steps, when building the back wall.

Fit the door to the opening and secure it to the frame using hinges. In addition, install a latch to the door. Make sure the door opens and closes easily.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Check out the rest of the project to learn how to build the main structure of the deer stand.

Hunting in the deer stand now, took 1 day to build it and assemble. Then disassembled and took to the property, there I added a metal stand I welded with cross braces. Painted and have seen deer my first day of hunting. I made the height a little less than the design, everything else is the same. Thank you, David
