Small Work Bench Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about small work bench plans. If you have a narrow workshop or your are a person that needs tools occasionally, then it would be a great idea to build this simple but sturdy workbench. My plans come with step by step instructions and you can easily adjust all the dimensions to suit your needs. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Building a simple workbench

Materials

A – 8 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 32″ long SIDES
B – 3 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 15 1/2″ long, 2 pieces – 48″ long TOPFRAME
C – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 42″ long, 1 piece – 9 1/2″ long BOTTOM FRAME
D – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 12 1/2″ long SUPPORTS
E – 1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 18 1/2″x48″ long TOP
F – 4 pieces of 3″ caster wheels CASTER WHEELS

5 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 8′
2 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 8′
1 piece of 3/4″ plywood – 2’x4′
3″ caster wheels
1 1/4″ brad nails, 2 1/2″ screws

Build a small workbench

Building the legs for the workbench

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the workbench. Cut the components for the cuts from 2×4 at 32″. Align the edges attentively and then make sure the edges are flush. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Add waterproof glue to the joints for a strong bond.

Building the tabletop frame

Use 2×6 lumber for the tabletop of the workbench. Cut the components at the right dimensions and lock everything together with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and check if the edges are flush.

Fitting the legs to the tabletop frame

Fit the legs to the frame of the top. Align everything with attention, drill pilot holes through the top of the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the tabletop frame. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the bottom supports

Fit the 2×4 supports to the bottom of the workbench. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock everything tightly. Install a stretcher to the middle of the supports, so you can enhance the rigidity of the workbench.

Fitting the top

Cut a piece of plywood and center it to the top of the workbench. You can easily adjust the size of the workbench top to suit your needs. Use 1 1/2″ brad nails and glue to secure the tabletop into place.

Fitting the supports for the hangers

Fit 2×4 supports to the sides of the workbench, so you can hang various tools with ease. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs.

The last step of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes and the dents with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper.

Build a small work bench
