How to Build Garage Shelves with Clamp Rack

This step by step diy project is about storage shelves with clamp rack plans free. I really needed a clap rack for my workshop, as well as more storage shelves for the tools. Therefore, I designed this basic storage unit so I can save up space and organize everything with attention. I built this project in several hours and I also have a time-lapse video so you can see how I made the shelves step by step.

You should always plan everything from the very beginning, in order to prevent costly mistakes and to save time. In most of the cases, you need a friend to give you a hand when assembling the project. Invest in high quality lumber and plywood, as the components will be exposed to bad weather. Protect the components with appropriate paint or stain.

There are a few tips that you should take into account, if you want to get a professional result. Therefore, take accurate measurements and use professional tools when making the cuts or when drilling pilot holes. Align the components at both ends and add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to create a rigid structure. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

The first step of the project is to build the frames for the storage unit. Cut the legs and the horizontal supports from 1×2 lumber. Lay the legs on a level surface and then attach the supports. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws.

Assemble the storage unit by attaching the 1×4 slats. Place 5/8″ plywood pieces between the slats to create even gaps. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats into place tightly.

I built a tray to the top of the storage unit, to store the small tools and screws, for example. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Fit the boards to the storage unit. Leave no gaps between the boards and align the edges at both ends. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the to the frames.

Fit the 1×2 board to the top of the back legs. This support is designed for the clamps. You can install several of these supports, so you can add more storage to the unit.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. In order to get a professional result, fill the holes and the gaps with wood filler and let it dry out for a few hours. Check if there are protruding screws and fix this issue, if necessary.

Smart Tip: Apply a few coats of stain or exterior paint to the components, in order to protect them from decay and water damage. Check out the rest of the outdoor plans featured on our website.
