This step by step diy woodworking project is about garden arbor plans free. If you want to learn how to build a beautiful garden arbor, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article and to check out the related projects. There are many storage projects featured on our site, so don’t be afraid to browse through the rest of the woodworking plans.

Before starting the actual construction project, we recommend you to plan everything, as to save money and to keep the costs under control. Adjust the size and the design of the wooden arbor to suit your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in high-quality materials, such as pine, redwood or cedar, as they have a nice finish and are highly durable, especially in a humid environment.

It is essential to invest in high quality materials, that are also water-resistant, such as pressure-treated lumber. Cut the components at the right size by using a circular saw and smooth the cut edges with a sand block. Don’t forget to ask a skilled friend to assist you during the project, especially if you don’t have a large expertise in the field. You need someone to hold the components into place, while you drive the screws in. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a garden arbor

Building the sides

Building the sides

First of all, you need to build the sides of the arbor. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the legs out of 2×4 lumber and the trellis out of 2×2 lumber. Lay the legs on a level surface and make sure you align the tops with great care. Adjust the distance between the legs to suit your needs. Drill pilot holes through the trellis and secure them to the legs using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

If you live in an area with strong winds, it would be a good idea to secure the posts to the ground using footings and anchors. alternatively, you could set the posts in concrete.

Fitting the vertical trellis

Fitting the vertical trellis

Fit a vertical trellis to the sides of the arbor, as described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the 2×2 component and secure it to the structure using 2 1/2″ screws and glue. Make sure you center the component into place before inserting the screws into place.

Building the support beams

Building the support beams

Build the support beams out of 2×6 lumber. If you want to add character to the garden arbor project, we recommend you to cut both ends of the beams in a decorative manner. Use a jigsaw to make all the curved cuts and fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the edges.

Attach the support beams to the top of the posts and clamp them into place tightly. Use a spirit level to make sure the support beams are horizontal and the posts are vertical. Drill pilot holes through both the legs and the posts. Insert 3 1/2″ carriage bolts and tighten the bolts appropriately.

Fitting the top trellis

Next, you need to fit the 2×2 trellis to the top of the arbor, as described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the components and secure them to the beams using 2 1/2″ screws and glue. Place the trellis equally-spaced and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
