6 Foot Picnic Table with Benches Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about 6 foot picnic table with benches plans. I have designed this sturdy picnic table, so you can create a nice serving area for your family and friends. This picnic table is very easy to build and it is extremely sturdy. All you need to get the job done are 2x4s and screws. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a 6′ picnic table with separate benches

Bench legs

Bench legs

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the benches. Cut the legs and the top supports from 2×4 lumber, using the instructions described in the diagram. Make 45 decorative cuts to both ends of the supports. Align the edges with attention and clamp them together tightly. Drill pilot holes through the supports and through the legs and insert 5″ carriage bolts to lock them together tightly.

Build the sides for the picnic table using the same techniques described above. Insert two carriage bolt for each joint, for a professional result.

Fitting the bottom braces

Fitting the bottom braces

After building the sides for the benches and for the table, you need to lock them together with 2×4 beams, as shown in the diagram. Make sure the corners are square and clamp them together tightly. Drill pilot holes and insert 5″ carriage bolts to secure the components together tightly.

Fitting the seat slats

Fitting the seat slats

After building the two sides for the 6 foot picnic table, you need to attach the 2×4 slats to the top of the benches. Center the slats into place, making sure you have equal overhangs on both sides. Place the slats equally spaced and then drill pilot holes. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure the seat slats into place.

Fitting the table slats

Repeat the process for the table slats. Countersink the head of the screws for a professional result. You can use a piece of 1/2″ plywood as spacer between the slats, so you create even gaps.

Fitting the stretchers

Fitting the stretchers

Fit the 2×4 stretchers to the bottom of the picnic table with detached benches, so you add more support. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure them into place tightly.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, drill the holes and the dents with wood putty and let it dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper and apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the table. If you like my project, don’t forget to SHARE it on Facebook and Pinterest.
