Building the wall support

Building the wall support

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the back of the shelves. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to lay the 2×8 slats on a level surface, making sure there are no gaps between them. Drill pocket holes along the edges and secure them together with 2 1/2″ screws and waterproof glue. Clamp the slats together and smooth the edges with sandpaper, in order to get a professional result.

Drill pilot holes through the slats before attaching the shelves into place. Use a spirit level to make sure the shelves are horizontal and leave no gaps between the components, if you want to get a professional result. Check if the corners are square before inserting the 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Countersink the head of the screws, if you want to get a professional result.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues. Fit a support to the top of the rack. Drill a pilot holes and insert a screws directly into a stud, in order to create a rigid joint.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the shelves.
