Assembling the frame of the crate

Assembling the frame of the crate

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the crates. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to build the components out of 1×6 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

The next step of the project is to attach the 1×2 cleats to the bottom of the crate. Drill pocket holes through the cleats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame of the crate. Add glue to the joints and use a spirit level to make sure the cleats are perfectly horizontal.

Fitting the bottom slats

Fitting the bottom slats

Build the bottom of the crate out of 1×3 lumber. Make sure the slats are 1/2″ thick and place them equally-spaced. Secure the slats into place using brad nails and waterproof glue.

Fitting the legs

Fitting the legs

Attach the 1×2 legs to the crates, as in the diagram. Use finishing nails and glue to secure the legs to the crate. Leave no gaps between the components.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the storage crates.
