How to build an armoire wardrobe

Building the frame of the armoir

Building the frame of the armoire

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the armoire wardrobe. As you can see in the image, you need to build a basic frame, by using 1×12 lumber. In order to create a rigid structure, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom shelf, as well as at the top of the side components.

Smart tip: Add wood glue to the joints before inserting the 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Check if the corners are right-angled, by using a good carpentry square and align the edges thoroughly.

Next, you need to attach the back of the armoire. Therefore, cut a piece of 1/4″ or 1/2″ plywood at the right size and attach it to the back of the wardrobe. Make sure that all sides of the frame are aligned at both ends and lock them into place with 1 1/4″ screws / nails.

Building the shelves

The next step of the project is install the shelves inside the frame of the wardrobe. In order to create maximum storage space in your wardrobe, you need to create several shelves using 1×10 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components. Use 1 1/4″  screws to lock all the components together into place. Make sure the corners are square.

Smart tip: Moreover, check if the vertical wall is plumb, by using a spirit level. In the right section of the wardrobe we will install a closet rod, but you can fit shelves if you want.

Building the trims

Building the trims

Continue the woodworking project by fitting 1×4 trims to the bottom and to the top of the armoire wardrobe. Cut the pieces of lumber at 34 1/2″ and lock them into place by using the pocket screw system. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the sides using 1 1/4″ screws.

You can see in the diagram a detailed image with the bottom trim. As you can notice, you need to cut out a small piece of the lumber, in order to enhance the look of the armoire. After drilling pocket holes add wood glue and insert the 1 1/4″ screws into the frame.

Although this step is not compulsory, we recommend you to take it into account if you want to get a professional result. Use several pieces of 1×2 lumber to enhance the look of the wardrobe. Use glue and 1 1/4″ finishing nails to lock the trims into place.

Continue installing the trims to the top of the closet, using the same techniques described above. Cut the components with a sharp saw after taking accurate measurements. Align the components at both ends before inserting the finishing nails.

Building the doors

Building the doors

One of the last steps of the project is to build the doors for the armoire and lock them to the frame. Cut two pieces of 1/4″ plywood and attach 1×3 trims to them, in order to get a beautiful design. Lock the trims to the exterior of the doors with glue and 1 1/4″ nails. Fit the doors inside the opening and lock them to the frame with metal hinges. Leave about 1/4″ gaps on all sides of the doors.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues. Attach the handles to the doors and move it to its permanent location.

Smart tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wardrobe.

I agree. Standard hanging closet is 24 inches, I think.
