Great website, it gave me a bunch of ideas. I started off by building the King Size Platform Bed. I used 2 x 10s Fir for the base, 2×4’s fir for the platform. I framed the platform sides with some 3/4” plywood (about 6” x 84”). I made the headboard with 1×6’s pine. I have about $300-$350 into it (lumber, screws, stain, rags, drop clothes, paint brushes, etc.). It took me about 30 hours to build, I took my time with it. I think the only thing I am missing is the LED lights for underneath the platform.
For stain, I used the color Old American. After I sanded it, I used the stain pre-treatment, then 2 coats of Old American Color Stain, then sealed with a satin finish sealer. The plans show the 2nd from top plank on the headboard, being cut to leave an opening. I decided not to do that, and just kept all of the planks whole. I learned that a 2×4 platform at 84” square wouldn’t fit through my bedroom door, so I had to modify it (i.e. cut it and reassembled it in the bedroom). Now I have to do some finishing touches, but that can wait.
