This step by step diy woodworking project is about wooden bench plans. Materials

  • A – 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 16″ long LEGS
  • B – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 12″ long, 2 pieces – 12 3/4″ long SUPPORTS
  • C – 1 piece of 2×4 lumber – 48 1/2″ long STRETCHER
  • D – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 15 1/2″ long TRIMS
  • E – 3 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 63 1/2″ long SEAT

  • 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 10 ft
  • 3 pieces of 2×6 lumber – 8 ft
  • 2 1/2″ screws
  • wood glue, wood filler, wood stain

Tools

  • Safety gloves, glasses
  • Miter saw, jigsaw
  • Chalk line, tape measure, spirit level, carpentry pencil
  • Drill machinery and drill bits

Tips

  • Apply several coats of wood stain to the wooden components
  • Fill the holes with wood filler and smooth the surface

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs of the bench. Cut both ends of the legs at 80 degrees, smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and lock them to the supports with galvanized screws. Drill pocket holes at the top ends of the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the supports. Add waterproof glue to enhance the joints.

Fit the bottom braces to the sides of the wooden bench, in order to enhance the rigidity of the bench. Cut both ends of the braces at 80 degrees, drill pocket holes and secure them to the legs with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws.

Fit a 2×3 stretcher between the two sides of the bench, in order to add strength to the frame. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretcher and secure it to the braces with galvanized screws.

Center the frame of the bench to the 2×6 seat and lock it into place with galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes through the supports and secure the frame to the slats with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure you leave to gaps between the slats, so you should consider locking the seat slats together by using pocket holes and screws.

Fit 2×4 trims to the bench, in order to enhance the look of the bench. Cut both ends of the 2×4 trims at 45 degrees and lock them to the bench frame with galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure.

Last but not least, we recommend you to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let it to dry out for several hours. Afterwards, smooth the wooden surface with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues.

Smart Tip: Apply several coats of stain or paint to the wooden components, if you want to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the wooden bench.
